It raises the whole how much Flash load time is realistic and the old Flash vs CSS/XHTML.

Could the site be designed in CSS/XHTML or wouldn't it have the same effect?

I think it is an absolutely beautiful site. Fabulous imagination and imagery.
I adore this style of graphics.

One thing that you might try Liuhan is to re-compress the images in photoshop and then compress each flash file again. Time consuming but maybe worth it. Since you are using a grunge technique, image and flash compression on various parts such as backgrounds will only make it a bit 'grungier' looking- a good thing- while shortening the load time considerably.

Here is a grungey image I did in kind of a salute to Chaba's work -heavy colors and over 20 layers at 1025x826, but weighs in at only around 100k. And I have compressed it down to 60k yet retained graphic integrity.

Sorry, liuhuan, it took too long to laod, so I didn't stick around to see it.

I think it starts a great discussion.. How necessary is Flash?

Personally I think the technology is great. I started doing animation in broadcast with After Effects, then moved to Flash for the web. Even though I love it, I don't know of many instances when it's the best way to display an interface.

Most visitors are going to a site to get information and will get frustrated if they have to sit through long load times and over animated transitions.

I think Flash would be best used in online advertising, leave the interface to a fast loading combination of XHTML/CSS.

So, now the bullseye is painted boldly on my forehead.

Ready.
Aim.
FIRE!

I have to agree with you 100% and this post pretty much confirms what I believe is using a great mix of the 2.

Not to beat a dead horse, but I had mentioned I didn't know of many instances where Flash was a great tool for site interface.

Here would be one of the few exceptions:
http://www.fantasticfourmovie.com

Why, you ask? Mainly becuase it uses Flash, but is still fast. The look and animation is appropriate for the demographic that it targets.

Just thought I would share an example of my point of view.

PS - Merry Christmas!

Oh dont get me started on flash.... used to teach it to advanced level and shall we say i have fallen totally OUT of love with it.... more than anything for its over use in places it shouldnt be used. It seems as thou designers started designing things in flash not for the client or to make the site more visually appealing, but more to prove to others that they can use flash! However the worst thing is there are im afraid only a small percentage of people out there that have really enhanced the true potential of flash and are using it in the right way. I must admit i didnt wait for your site to load liuhuan, i have a very fast line and it was still loading after a minute...

I couldn't agree more. It has become the new animated gif. I had a very large client that wanted animated gifs spinning and flashing all over their web site (this was about 6 years ago). I had to refuse to do it (usually a no no) and explained that the best use of animation is sparingly so that it will catch the attention of your visitors.

Flash has become over used, and thus, less effective.
